What are Web Services?

Product Version Platform
Genero Web Services All All

Web services are a standard way of communicating between applications over the Internet or Intranet. They define how to communicate between two entities:

  • A server that exposes services
  • A client that consumes the services

Web Services can be written in any language, such as C++ or Java or BDL.
Web Services opens the world to Genero applications as well as to other vendors that can now communicate with Genero programs.

What are document style Web Services?

Product Version Platform
Genero Web Services All All

Document Style Web Services are not used to exchange all types of documents (like Word or Excel, for example); only XML documents can be transmitted. Moreover, they can only be transmitted as an instantiation of an XML Schema.

XML Schema is a kind of contract (also written in XML) to describe how an XML document must look. This is then used by the client and the server to communicate together, because they know exactly what is to be sent and what they will get.
