Accessible names for screen readers

Screen readers now announce a form field by its TITLE attribute. For a BUTTON or a CHECKBOX without a TITLE, screen readers announce its TEXT attribute instead. When a CHECKBOX has both attributes, screen readers announce its TITLE. Start this TITLE with the same words as the TEXT. The COMMENT attribute no longer sets the screen reader name. It still sets the tooltip, which now appears on the control itself instead of the whole widget. Add a TITLE to fields that have only a COMMENT and to table and tree columns that have no TITLE. For more information, go to Screen readers in the Genero Business Development Language User Guide.

The new i18n-aria-label attribute translates the screen reader name of a template element. For more information, go to Customize translation text.

Minimum table height

The new minHeight style attribute sets the minimum height of a TABLE or TREE container, in rows. For more information, go to Table style attributes in the Genero Business Development Language User Guide.

Widget HTML changes

In GBC 6.00.09, the HTML of several widgets changes for accessibility. These changes may affect a customization that copies a widget template, styles its elements, or accesses them in JavaScript. The following table lists the affected templates and elements, and the selectors to check in a customization.

Table 1. Widget HTML changes in GBC 6.00.09
Template or element Change What to check in a customization
GroupTitleWidget.tpl.html The root element is a <div> instead of a <button>. A new .gbc_GroupTitleWidget__toggle element inside the root holds the label and the collapse icon. The toggle element is a <button> for a collapsible group and a <span> for any other group. CSS rules on button.gbc_GroupTitleWidget, on direct children of .gbc_GroupTitleWidget, and on .gbc_GroupTitleWidget:focus. To make the group title a heading, update a customized copy of the 6.00.08 template.
Window title that WindowListService builds in the ChromeBar A new div.gbc_ChromeBar__Title element inside .gbc_ChromeBar__MiddleContainer holds the title item, li.gbc_appItem. Child selectors such as .gbc_ChromeBar__MiddleContainer > li.gbc_appItem.
RTableWidget.tpl.html, RTableItemWidget.tpl.html A new .gbc_RTableWidget__table element contains the header, data, and footer row groups. This element, instead of the widget root, carries the role, the Tab stop, and the focus. It has role="grid" instead of role="table", and each cell has role="gridcell" instead of role="cell". Child selectors such as .gbc_RTableWidget > .gbc_TableDataGroup, and selectors such as .gbc_RTableWidget:focus, [role="table"], or [role="cell"].
Stars that StarRatingWidget builds in JavaScript Each star is a <span aria-hidden="true"> instead of a <button>. The widget root is the only Tab stop. The star class and the gbc_StarRatingWidgetMixin mixin do not change. Selectors on the star buttons, such as .gbc_StarRatingWidget button.
Titles:
  • .mt-dialog-title in ModalWidget and SidePanelWidget
  • .mt-card-header-text in SessionEndWidget, SessionWaitingEndWidget, and ApplicationLauncherWidget
  • .settingTitle in SettingsWidget
  • .gbc_FilterableListWidget__title
  • .gbc_TableConfigSidePanelWidget__sectionTitle
Each title is a native heading instead of a <div> or a <span>:
  • .mt-dialog-title is an <h2>. For a 4GL modal window, it is an <h1>, also in a customized copy of the template.
  • .mt-card-header-text is an <h1>.
  • The other titles are <h3> elements.
Selectors that name the former tag, such as div.mt-dialog-title or span.mt-card-header-text.
