How to retrieve the list of available locales on the system

On UNIX™ systems, the locale command with the parameter '-a' writes the names of available locales.

$ locale -a
... 
en_US 
en_US.iso885915 
en_US.utf8 
en_ZA 
en_ZA.utf8 
en_ZW
